Huffington Post Launches HuffPost Live

The Huffington Post is a very popular website for news amongst other content. The “paper” is something similar to a printed newspaper you might find in any newsagents. Recently, they released a new website entitled “HuffPost Live.” Adage interviewed Roy Sekoff enquiring about the progress of the platform.

  • HuffPost Live offers 12 hours of live video “news” per day
  • Not all of the “news” shared is really news, e.g. Episodes entitled “Lessons from Drag Queens” and “What’s a Union?”
  • There are no traditional commercials but instead it’s funded through sponsorship deals
  • Sponsorship includes pre-roll video ads and future custom-marketing integrations
  • The community around HuffPost Live is “engaging” and community members are invited to come on live
  • Huffington Post needed to develop an entire CMS and and dashboard on their own
  • The live content is complimented with Google+ Hangouts and Skype
  • The platform offers a very wide range of content on a number of topics

Having a forward-thinking organisation like the Huffington Post commit to on-line video only reinforces the potential that video has to increase engagement and increase the bottom-line in a digital world. The Huffington Post chose to build their entire platform themselves but there are plenty of services, such as Skylab’s MediaTank that could have easily been customised to suit their needs.

Video is one of the most dominant forms of online communication available today and it’s obvious that its presence in our digital world will only increase over time especially with commitments from brands like the Huffington Post. There’s no question that video will continue to be a driving force in on-line media consumption and user engagement.
