Unused Fibre Optic Lines Buried Under Manchester For The Past 10 Years

“The Loop” is a high speed fibre optic system currently buried beneath the streets of Manchester. Gamma, the company who purchased the cables is calling upon Manchester residents and businesses to help put the network to better use.

  • The cables have been dubbed “The Loop”
  • They have sat dormant beneath Manchester for the past 10 years
  • Cable speeds will top 1 GB/s
  • The cables have been maintained by Gamma over since purchase
  • The entire cable system was bought for £1.7 million at an auction
  • Gamma is looking for anyone interested in the project to get in touch

With this fantastic find it’s easy to understand why “The Loop” is referred to as buried treasure beneath Manchester’s city streets in our source’s article. A strong digital infrastructure is necessary to push cities into the forefront of technology. Normally, laying of fibre optic lines costs millions of pounds but these lines are already buried which offsets a great deal of the initial costs.

By developing a powerful digital infrastructure Manchester becomes very appealing for all businesses and digital sector services. These fibre optic lines may be the trigger to a technological economic boom for Manchester. Once the lines are connected to the internet it shouldn’t take long to see the effect on businesses city-wide.
