Understanding Current Online Video Viewing Trends

Skylab is hiring!

Online video viewing trends have increased quite a bit over the past few years. This leads marketers and businesses towards video to best engage with their audiences. Recent trends offer interesting insight and present a great opportunity for audience engagement.

  • ‘In 2011, more than 100 million Americans watched online video content on an average day, representing a 43-percent increase versus a year ago.’
  • ‘The average number of minutes per video view rose from 5.0 minutes to 5.8 minutes by the end of 2011, due in large part to the increasing adoption of long-form video content viewing.’
  • ‘The volume of video ads streamed across the internet increased 20% in 2011 versus the previous year, but the ratio of the number of video ads to total videos grew at a somewhat more muted rate, from 12.8% to 14.1%.’

The above statistics collected by socialmediatoday.com illustrate a huge increase in video views, an increase in the length of online videos and an obvious correlation in increased video advertising. The increase in Americans watching video online means they are engaging more with online video. An increase in minutes per view could indicate that more people are watching TV or movies online, however, long-form video content is highly effective. With more people watching video online it makes sense that there are more ads being delivered through video.

As broadband and high speed wireless internet connections grow and portable technology decreases in price digital marketers are presented with the perfect conditions for immersive, successful, video marketing programmes. These opportunities will continue to grow in the form of commercials, interactive ads, on-page call to actions and many others. Video is and will be a dominate form of content consumed by internet users for the foreseeable future.

The following image / statistics visualise the increase in unique video viewers, videos and minutes per viewer between 2011 and 2012. The data comes from comScore on ReelSEO and it clearly shows that video engagement has grown steadily in the past year. Remember, the numbers on the chart and document below are in the millions and billions.
