Olympic Athletes’ Hub: Setting The Standard For Future Event Marketing

Leading up to and continuing after the start of the Olympics digital media has sprung up everywhere!

A great example of this is the now, widely publicised, Olympic Athletes’ Hub. The hub allows visitors to quickly follow their favourite Olympian across a number of social media platforms.

  • You can find almost every athlete participating in the Olympics
  • You can choose to follow individuals, countries, a sport / discipline or a specific event
  • The hub has 3.3 million Likes on Facebook
  • The hub integrates commentary from a variety of social sources such as Twitter and Facebook
  • The hub has a rewards programme stating “Earn rewards by following your favourite athletes and participating in the community. Unlock badges, win prizes and see which of your friends is the ultimate Olympic Fan.”

It’s no wonder the media is calling this the first “Social Olympics”. The opportunities that are presented to fans to reach out to their favourite athletes will only increase further as the industry develops. For the first time individuals have a direct line to the athletes and the masses have the ability to show their support.

It is fantastic to experience the changing digital world as it merges with traditional events and the Olympic Games is a wonderful example of this, demonstrating it’s ability to reach out to the four corners of the globe and provide a community base that allows everyone from fans to friends to athletes the ability to engage and interact.

Social media has had a dramatic impact on the way we communicate today and the platforms we choose to use, worldwide, and there’s no reason to think it will stop here. We will see more events focus on social media in the future and place this at the heart of the event strategy, striving to bring new levels of engagement to the fans and participants.

If you are organising an event or sporting occasion and you want to harness the power of digital and social media to increase participation or to communicate to a larger audience email us directly at [email protected] or on Twitter @studioskylab.
