Fifty years ago, Manchester United became the first English team to win the European Cup beating Benfica 4-1 at Wembley Stadium. On the way to that historic victory, United played games all over Europe including Malta, Yugoslavia, Poland and Spain.
In the second round, United was drawn with FK Sarajevo, Yugoslavia and drew 0-0 away, before beating a spirited Sarajevo side 2-1 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
On our recent visit to Bosnia, we had the opportunity to see the original gift that was given to the FK Sarajevo team by Manchester United back in November 1967. This is a rare piece of football memorabilia that is not often seen.
For Manchester United programme collectors, the away programme in Sarajevo has become the ‘holy grail’ with only around eight programmes known to exist. FK Sarajevo confirmed that unfortunately they lost their only two copies in a fire a few years ago.
